Edison & Ford Winter Estates Pool and Water Cictern

Among Florida's first modern swimming pools, this pool was built by Thomas Edison in 1910. It is constructed of Edison Portland Cement, for which he had 40 patents dealing with its development and production. He built the pool for the entertainment of his family and guests.

After almost 100 years since the pool and cistern's construction extensive renovation was necessary to ensure preservation for future generations. Exposure to the hot Florida sun and past hurricanes had taken their toll on these historical treasures, the pool required significant work. After completing the concrete repair work the pool was resurfaced. The coating chosen to refinish the pool was the cementitious waterproofing membrane AQUAFIN-2K/M. The 2K/M was pigmented green and applied to the interior surfaces of the Edison swimming pool. Joints and penetration details were treated with JOINT SEALING TAPE-2000 to ensure a watertight seal throughout the structure.

Mr. Edison may not have invented the repair process used or the AQUAFIN coating, but we think he would be impressed!
