Garden City "Big Pool"
The 'Big Dipper' as it was called in 1922 when it was first built, is a very large pool, as big as a football field. When all the adjectives are added, it is the 'largest outdoor, concrete, free, municipal pool' in the world. Holding approximately 2.6 million gallons of water, the pool has 17 lifeguards on duty when it is completely open.
During Spring of 2003 and 2004 the “Big Pool” underwent renovations to enhance its appearance and repair the waterproofing. This was not just another pool job, the walls and floor contain 44,000 ft² of concrete held together along 6,500 ft of construction and expansion joints. The waterproofing solution needed to address all of these elements, as well as provide a decorative, non-slip finish that would withstand chlorine and other pool chemicals.
After evaluating several products, the AQUAFIN-2K/M waterproofing system and JOINT SEALING TAPES were chosen for their superior capabilities and performance. AQUAFIN-2K/M addressed all of the demands for redoing the pool, as it is waterproof, highly chemical and UV resistant, and provides a decorative non-slip surface. The first step, following surface preparation, was to address the many expansion and construction joints in the pool. After detailing with a single coat of 2K/M, JOINT SEALING TAPE-2000-S was embedded into expansion joints (J.S. TAPE-2000 for construction joints). The tapes were then covered with a second coat of 2K/M to create the seal along areas of potential cracking. Next the entire pool was coated in two coats of 2K/M White, with a spray pump to speed up application. Finally, after applying 2K/M, the lane markings were repainted and the pool was refilled.
The AQUAFIN products have provided the “Big Pool” with a waterproofing solution that exceeded their requirements. Today many happy swimmers spend their summers cooling down and relaxing by the pool, and the owners can be confident that their new pool coating will provide long term trouble free service.
