Phoenix Sky Harbor is the sixth busiest airport and third largest airport rental car market in the country with $250 million annual gross revenue. To meet growing demand and prepare for future growth, the airport constructed a consolidated rental car center that houses all on-airport rental car companies and their operations.

Terrazzo flooring was specified for much of the interior space, including the main lobby. Terrazzo flooring is non-breathable and therefore levels of moisture vapor emission (MVER) must be below 3 lbs. Calcium chloride tests were taken prior to installation and the MVER rates ranged from 4.57 lbs to 8.36 lbs, much higher than acceptable. In order to properly install the flooring Advanced Terrazzo, an installer of terrazzo flooring systems since 1956, needed to find a material that would lower the MVER and provide a suitable surface for the subsequent flooring material.

Advanced Terrazzo chose VAPORTIGHT COAT-SG1 as the material to protect their flooring installation. SG1 is a liquid applied vapor retarder which reduces levels of MVER from 15 lbs down to 3 lbs or less. Approximately 37,000 SF of concrete was treated with SG1, including slabs on grade as well as slabs above grade poured onto metal pan decks. The concrete slabs were prepared by shotblasting, which allows SG1 to penetrate below the surface and form a mechanical bond. Next they were sprayed with water, a unique step because SG1 is a 97% solids epoxy and most epoxy coatings require a completely dry application field. SG1 does not, which is beneficial for areas with high MVER where significant amounts of moisture can make it difficult to dry out slabs. The SG1 was applied in 1 coat at a rate of 200 SF per gallon, to ensure protection against MVER.

After treating slabs with VAPORTIGHT COAT-SG1, terrazzo flooring was installed in a color palette that echoes the surrounding desert landscape. Intricate logos were also created right within the terrazzo flooring for some of the rental car companies. The new facility at PHX airport not only received aesthetically beautiful floors, but the assurance that their investment is protected by the AQUAFIN system.
