Recoating & Repairs with 1K & 2K/M Recommended Procedures for Recoating and Repair Applications of AQUAFIN®-1K and AQUAFIN®-2K/M Recoating or repair of AQUAFIN-1K and/or AQUAFIN-2K/M applications may be required under certain conditions, including: •C ompleting a multi-layer application when the recoat window between coats has been exceeded (missed) • P erforming localized repairs due to punctures or similar types of damage (e.g. in zoo ponds or aquariums) •M aintaining continued waterproofing performance when signs of surface wear are evident Repairing and Recoating Existing AQUAFIN-1K Applications with AQUAFIN-1K: 1. Remove all loose, unbonded, or damaged areas of AQUAFIN-1K by mechanical means. 2. Mechanically abrade the surface of existing AQUAFIN-1K using a wire wheel attached to an angle grinder. 3. Thoroughly clean the existing surface and completely remove all residue by pressure washing, hydro blasting, or wiping with water and a wet sponge. 4. Immediately prior to reapplication, pre-dampen the existing AQUAFIN-1K surface, ensuring no standing water remains. 5. Apply the first fresh coat of AQUAFIN-1K by brush, working it thoroughly into the existing substrate. Follow all written instructions on the current AQUAFIN-1K Technical Data Sheet. 6. (Optional 2nd Coat) Apply a second fresh coat of AQUAFIN-1K as soon as the first coat has set, but remains ”green“ [typically 4 to 6 hours at 68°F (20°C), 60% RH]. The second coat must be applied within 24 hours. Recoating Existing AQUAFIN-1K Applications with AQUAFIN-2K/M: 1. Mechanically abrade the surface of existing AQUAFIN-1K using a wire wheel attached to an angle grinder. 2. Thoroughly clean the existing surface and completely remove all residue by pressure washing, hydro blasting, or wiping with water and a wet sponge. 3. Allow the surface of AQUAFIN-1K to dry completely. Do not pre-dampen the AQUAFIN-1K surface prior to applying AQUAFIN-2K/M. 4. Apply the first fresh coat of AQUAFIN-2K/M by brush, working it thoroughly into the existing surface of AQUAFIN-1K. Follow all written instructions on the current AQUAFIN-2K/M Technical Data Sheet. 5. (Optional 2nd Coat) Apply a second fresh coat of AQUAFIN-2K/M, as soon as the first coat has sufficiently hardened [typically 4 to 6 hours at 68°F (20°C), 60% RH]. The second coat must be applied within 24 hours. Notes: Inspect the surface of existing AQUAFIN-1K for any damage prior to applying AQUAFIN-2K/M. Repair all damaged areas following instructions for “Repairing and Recoating Existing AQUAFIN-1K Applications with AQUAFIN-1K” in this Technical Bulletin before proceeding. Allow freshly applied AQUAFIN-1K to dry for at least 24 hours, then apply AQUAFIN-2K/M within 72 hours. Repairing and Recoating Existing AQUAFIN-2K/M Applications with AQUAFIN-2K/M: 1. Remove all loose, unbonded, and/or damaged areas of AQUAFIN-2K/M by mechanical means. 2. Clean the surface of existing AQUAFIN-2K/M and completely remove all residue by pressure washing or hydro blasting. 3. Allow the surface of AQUAFIN-2K/M to dry completely. Do not pre-dampen the existing AQUAFIN-2K/M surface prior to reapplication. 4. Apply the first fresh coat of AQUAFIN-2K/M by brush, working it thoroughly into the existing surface of AQUAFIN-2K/M. Follow all written instructions on the current AQUAFIN-2K/M Technical Data Sheet. 5. (Optional 2nd Coat) Apply a second fresh coat of AQUAFIN-2K/M, as soon as the first coat has sufficiently hardened [typically 4 to 6 hours at 68°F (20°C), 60% RH]. The second coat must be applied within 24 hours. Additional General Notes: • P lease defer to EOR (Engineer of Record) or design professional for the project and follow Aquafin Technical Data Sheets, ACI and ICRI guidelines, and common concrete practices. • Every construction project is unique; no two are exactly the same. Likewise, concrete slab and masonry wall characteristics will vary between projects. Site-specific conditions may require specialized surface preparation procedures or the use of particular application techniques. In the event of atypical conditions or project constraints, please contact Aquafin Technical Department for guidance. •A ll concrete and masonry substrates must be strong, solid, stable, and of load bearing capacity. •A reas designated to receive repairs must remain structurally sound and stable during demolition and surface preparation work, and these conditions must continue throughout the course of the repair work. Any areas of concern or uncertainty should be discussed immediately with the site Superintendent and brought to the attention of the EOR. Recoating & Repairs with 1K & 2K/M •A ll active leaks must be plugged/stopped prior to the application of AQUAFIN-1K and/or AQUAFIN-2K/M. Contact Aquafin Technical Department or your local Aquafin Representative for product recommendations, which may include the use of MORTAR-LN for crack and joint treatment and/or Aquafin Injection Grouts for active leaks causing water accumulation. • For AQUAFIN-1K, AQUAFIN-2K/M, or any liquid-applied waterproofing system to perform effectively, the membrane must remain continuous. Spot repairs, as outlined in this Technical Bulletin, are acceptable. However, for these repairs to be effective, the existing AQUAFIN-1K or AQUAFIN-2K/M application should extend over the entire wall and/or floor surface(s). • Like all cementitious waterproofing products, variations in temperature, humidity, substrate moisture, air movement, application methods, and finishing techniques, will contribute to the end look of the finished product. Consistency in areas mentioned above typically yield a relatively uniform result. However, color uniformity of AQUAFIN-1K and/or AQUAFIN-2K/M is not guaranteed. •A lways refer to the most current published Technical Data Sheets available online for up-to-date information. • Please contact Aquafin Technical Department for any questions about recoating and/or repair procedures with AQUAFIN-1K, AQUAFIN-2K/M or any other Aquafin products.
